According to the IRS, when you file an extension:

  • An extension to file doesn’t grant an extension to pay your taxes

  • You should estimate and pay any owed taxes by your regular tax deadline to avoid any possible penalties

  • You must file your extension no later than your regular return due date

  • By filing either a return on time or requesting an extension by the April 18 filing deadline, you’ll avoid the late-filing penalty, which can be 10 times as costly as the penalty for not paying.
